Jost Van Dyke, BVI

Jost van dyke British Virgin Islands

As the Caribbean's "barefoot island," Jost Van Dyke has only to deliver on a lack of sophistication in order to keep visitors happy. Jost Van Dyke is a reputedly family-friendly, safe island whose main street is actually a beach. No need for a car on this 4 square mile island, as Jost Van Dyke is perfect for vacationing pedestrians. A ferry from either St. Thomas or Tortola will bring you to White Bay on Jost Van Dyke, which is the smallest of the four main British Virgin Islands. Jost Van Dyke's relatively few year-round inhabitants welcome smaller boats to their shores as they cherish their mountainous, lesser-developed (meaning devoid of mega resorts) home.

Little Harbor

Jost Van Dyke is notable for Little Harbor, which hosts an anchorage with moorings and wonderful lobster feasts! There are three restaurants at Little Harbor: Abe's by the Sea, Sidney's Peace & Love, and Harris' Place. All three restaurant names hint at a straightforward simplicity that visitors to Jost Van Dyke certainly will appreciate. Sidney, of Sidney's Peace & Love, serves lobster he catches on nearby Anegada reef. He cooks the lobsters over an open fire and serves them up with several sides and a fair bit of hot butter. If seafood doesn't suit your palate, Sidney also does a pig roast two nights a week.

Picnic and Snorkel

Jost Van Dyke also offers close proximity to several tropical isles that are great for day anchoring. Little Jost Van Dyke, Green Cay & Sandy Spit, Sandy Cay, and Westernmost Great Tobago are all beautiful locations. Bring a picnic, plan to snorkel, and be grateful you have this time to yourself, as you may be the only one there. Westernmost Great Tobago, for example, is known for its nesting seabird population instead of casinos, shops, and bustling boardwalks.

White Bay

National Geographic Traveler deemed Jost Van Dyke's White Bay Villages & Seaside Cottages worthy of note for their sustainable practices and inherent blend with their island's environment. While maintaining the spirit of Jost Van Dyke, White Bay Villages & Seaside Cottages also all provide fully equipped kitchens, linens in the bedrooms, TVs, DVD and CD players, phones, grills, and child care services. These rentals deserve individual mention:

  • Plantation Villa & Plantation Villa Guest House. Three bedrooms, each with a private porch and bathroom. 4000+ square feet. A dining area among papaya, banana, and mango trees. Upstairs suite with an observation tower. Private apartment (Guest House) located on first floor.
  • Hillside Villas. Two bedrooms, two baths. Queen futon in sitting area for additional sleeping room.
  • Sunset Villa East. Two bedrooms, two baths. Gazebo directly over the water- perfect spot for sunrise and sunset.
  • Sunset Villa West. Studio. One bedroom, one bath. Couple's escape with a wrap-around deck providing panoramic views of all the virgin islands.
  • Seaside Cottages. Stand-alone cottages with quiet privacy.

Jost Van Dyke, dubbed "The Last Virgin Island," takes all the excitement of a typical vacation package and weeds out the anxious crowds, harassment, and complications, leaving you with an internal sense of accomplishment for having "discovered" the place on your own; giant cruise ships can't bother you here.

How can we not end by mentioning the party to end all parties at FOXY's on New Years Eve?!
