St. Kitts & Nevis

Nevis St Kitts

Background:

St. Kitts (also called St. Christopher) & Nevis is a federal two-island nation and the smallest sovereign state in the Americas. St. Kitts & Nevis was settled by the British in 1623- though there were tribal peoples living there- and later gained its independence in 1983. Now St. Kitts & Nevis is a constitutional monarchy with full status at the UN. The capital of St. Kitts & Nevis is Basseterre, and the two islands are separated by a channel called The Narrows. Central peaks of the island's interior are covered with tropical rainforests while the coasts supply locals and tourists with the requisite Caribbean beaches and beautiful waters.

The pre-Columbian names for St. Kitts & Nevis were Liamuiga and Oualie, respectively, which mean "fertile land" and "land of beautiful waters." The nation of St. Kitts & Nevis is a third of the way from Puerto Rico to Trinidad & Tobago. The land of St. Kitts & Nevis is rich volanic soil and useful for agriculture, hence the establishment of sugar cane plantations by colonizers. Because St. Kitts & Nevis were settled early on by Europeans (English and French), they served as a base of expansion into other areas of the Caribbean. A stronghold of British influence remains in the popularity of cricket on St. Kitts & Nevis; this is the smallest nation ever to host a World Cup event (Cricket, 2007).

Activities:

St. Kitts & Nevis offers its share of beaches, attractions, and yachting draws. Assuming, in the very least, that you want to see a beach or two, here is a list explaining where to find what suits you:

  • Banana Bay, for the coconut trees
  • Cockleshell, on The Narrows with views of Nevis
  • Dieppe Bay Beach, for black sand and coral reefs
  • Friars Bay, to enjoy calm water, food, and drinks with your family
  • Frigate Bay (North), to check out the hotels' water sports or Frigate Bay (South), to party
  • Half Moon Bay and Conaree (both on the Atlantic), for bodysurfing
  • Pump Bay, to dive and snorkel at a black sand beach
  • Sandy Bank (next to Turtle Bay), for a private, romantic beach getaway
  • Turtle Beach, to experience the very end of the South East Peninsula
  • White House Bay, for sunken tugboat rocky reef exploration

St. Kitts & Nevis's attractions include Brimstone Hill Fortress, St. Kitts Scenic Railway, and Pinney's Beach. Head to the fortress to picnic near a national park and to see nearby islands Montserrat, Saba, Statia, St. Martin, and St. Barts. Visit the railway to take in the scenery and the historical sugar cane tracks. Go to Nevis's Pinney's Beach to "stumble upon" a hidden lagoon with golden sand.

For those coming by boat, St. Kitts & Nevis welcomes yachties and encourages them to stay. The marina at Port Zante has anchorages and from there you can visit Basseterre's historic center. Also, you might want to raise a glass with fellow sailors at the St. Kitts Yacht Club at the Ballahoo Restaurant. Cheers!
