Virgin Gorda BVI.

Virgin Gorda Virgin Islands

Virgin Gorda may have been named after the geographical image Christopher Columbus dreamed he was seeing, but the moniker is apt even today- albeit for different reasons. This 'fat virgin' of an island (from afar it looks like a reclining woman) does not resemble its name once you are on land, but Virgin Gorda is nonetheless quite heavy on luxury, indulgence, and wealth. Particularly spectacular are Virgin Gorda's national parks, high-end resorts, and contagious joie de vivre.

Attractions

First on the list of attractions for the jet set are a couple of national parks worthy of a visit. The most awesome is The Baths National Park where granite boulders have formed sheltered sea pools. This unbelievable site is a mere 15 minute hike away from Devil's Bay National Park, which has gorgeous secluded beaches. To the north of The Baths is Spring Bay, which features a perfect white sand beach. Another national park, the Copper Mine, is on the southwest tip of Virgin Gorda and is where one goes to see the remains of a chimney and mine shaft left over from the days when Virgin Gorda might have made your fortune.

Places to stay and eat?

Now back to present day when people come to Virgin Gorda to spend their fortune; the best of what it is to live in luxury is offered here. According to Frommer's, there are a handful of hotels that deserve the highest marks. They are Biras Creek Resort, the Bitter End Yacht Club, and Katitche Point Greathouse. Biras Creek Resort has panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and North Sound, and the Bitter End Yacht Club has sailing, water sport, and kite boarding lessons for guests. Also worth mentioning is Little Dix Bay Hotel established by Laurance Rockefeller in the 1960s, which turned Virgin Gorda from an agricultural community to one that could support luxury tourism. Little Dix Bay Hotel also runs the world-class Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor.

Shopping

Shopping on Virgin Gorda is rather limited, which may be a good thing. If in need of an item, a few stores to peruse are: Tropical Gift Collections, Pusser's Company Store, Island Silhouette, Reeftique, and Virgin Gorda Craft Shop. The best restaurants (as well as shopping) are often located on the grounds of secluded resorts, accessible only by boat. Once there, you will experience the best in international cuisine, but it is best to call first to secure a table and the proper route to get there!

Getting there.

Speaking of 'getting there', the most reasonable way to come to Virgin Gorda is by ferry from Tortola or St. Thomas. The most elegant way other than a private yacht charter is to book a room at a luxury hotel and have the staff pick you up the the Beef Island Airport. Virgin Gorda revolves around seclusion, privacy, and first class service at exclusive locations. There is a pier at Spanish Town that can accommodate smaller cruise ships, but most of Virgin Gorda's reputation is staked on more understated elegance.

Virgin Gorda does nothing to deter a family from enjoying a wonderful day trip. Despite the fanfare that accompanies yachties and all-inclusive resorts, there are many casual options within Virgin Gorda's nine square miles. Savannah Bay, Handsome Bay, and Big Trunk Bay are all great beaches, and a picnic style restaurant called Fat Virgin Cafe places importance on an attitude of 'Big drinks. Great food. No Shoes.'. With Virgin Gorda being an escape for the wealthy, it is nice to know that laid-back family establishments can thrive here too.
