St. Vincent & the Grenadines
Background:
St. Vincent & the Grenadines is a great destination for nature lovers. St. Vincent has the rainforest, and the Grenadines have beaches and reefs. The Grenadines is also commonly referred to as the Windward islands. There are ample scuba diving and hiking opportunities, and the southern coast of St. Vincent provides a fabulous yacht destination with its anchorages, provisions, restaurants, and hotels. St. Vincent & the Grenadines is located between St. Lucia and Grenada in the Caribbean; it is comprised of semi-submerged volcanic mountains and therefore has many black sand beaches. You can tour St. Vincent's coasts, villages, waterfalls, mountains, and forests by taxi, and it is best to tour the Grenadines by sea!
Hiking is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding activities on St. Vincent. An excellent hike is the climb up La Soufriere volcano. In conjunction with hiking, visitors should make St. Vincent & the Grenadines' many waterfalls part of their itinerary. Trinity Falls, Dark View Falls, Vermont Nature Trail, and Cumberland Nature Trail are a few of the recommended sites. St. Vincent & the Grenadines has both short, easy hikes and also full day treks. Trails are generally on cleared paths that will take you through forests, up mountains, along coasts, and over bluffs. Negotiating the islands' rocky parts and cross-terrain paths may prove challenging for some.
St. Vincent has botanical gardens outside of Kingstown where you can see the parrots that the island is famous for. Parrots are best seen at dusk and dawn, but there are other birds to watch for: whistling warblers, hummingbirds, and various migrants. The Vermont Nature Trails are also good for bird watching. After checking out the islands' winged creatures, you can catch a soccer game, cricket match, or go see the aquatic natural wonders that abound near the beach.
St. Vincent is home to Indian Bay on its south coast as well as several black sand beaches scattered elsewhere. These secluded beaches are wonderful and worth visiting: Richmond Beach, Bucanert Bay, Mt. Wynne, Sandy Bay, and Black Point Beach. Other marine activities include turtle, dolphin, and whale watching. Turtle watching is offered along with the opportunity to learn about island conservation. Fantasea Tours and Sea Breeze Nature Tours offer the dolphin and whale watching adventures where you can see bottlenose and spinner dolphins as well as humpback, sperm, and pilot whales. For therapeutic bathing, head to St. Vincent's northeast section to relax in the Owia Salt Pond, which is sheltered from the sea by volcanic boulders.
To get to St. Vincent you can take an inter-island ferry, or you can fly in to E.T. Joshua Airport at Kingstown, the main town. Currently, a new airport is under construction so you should look for flights to Argyle International Airport in the future. Though the Carib Indians warded off European settlement until the 18th Century, the island now welcomes visitors of every nationality to its shores. During your stay, explore outside of Kingstown by seeking Layou, Barrouallie, Chateaubelair, Georgetown, and Caliaqua, which are notable towns on St. Vincent. Keep heading south along the Grenadines and you'll eventually hit Grenada, the Spice Isle. There are over 30 islands among St. Vincent & the Grenadines that are waiting for you to come and explore!
