The Great Barrier Reef

There are interesting attractions for your yacht charter along the length of the 2,500km long Great Barrier Reef (which runs from just north of Brisbane - all the way up the Queensland coast to New Guinea). For Yacht charters in the area, the two most popular cruising destinations are the Whitsunday Islands on the central section and the northern section of the Great Barrier Reef between Cairns and the tip of Cape York.

The Whitsunday Islands have approximately 70 islands within the group and the area is characterized by beautiful pure silica beaches, verdant tropical forest, azure waters, consistent trade winds for sailing vessels, offshore diving and a number of 5 star resorts.

Cruising occurs all year round on The Great Barrier Reef, with the best weather conditions are experienced in October / November. From November to March the area can receive the brunt of cyclones.

In addition to the permanent attractions on the Great Barrier Reef such as islands, reef systems, diving, explorer and aboriginal history, coastal rainforest and associated unique wildlife... a number of seasonal attraction also occur including humpback and minke whale season from June to October, mass coral spawning around October / November and gamefishing for Marlin, sailfish and other big game species in October / November on the northern section of the reef.
